Counterfactual conditionals refer to the sentences where their conditions are opposite to the real world situation. By counterfactual conditionals, one can imagine another possible aspect of a situation other than that of actual events which have been occurred. Previous studies have fully analyzed the Chinese and English counterfactual conditionals in terms of morphological characteristics and its meaning, but the efforts are only limited to the case where the conditional clause (protasis) deals with past events. In this paper, however, we suggest a five-category classification of conditionals based on tense and epistemic stance of protasis, which effectively includes “alternative conditionals” whose protasis deals with future events. Based on the classification, we clearly describe morphological, lexical features of Chinese counterfactual conditionals in comparison with its English and Korean counterparts.
