South Korea used to boast the second largest number of Japanese language learners as a percentage of its total population. However, the revised secondary education and anemic Japanese economy contributed to plummeting of the figure from 2011. While the number is back on the rise, albeit little by little, it hardly exhibits the kind of vibrance and enthusiasm it used to enjoy in the past. With the slogan of ‘raising global leaders’ presented everywhere, the key to a renaissance of Japanese language learning lies in the education of young children. Whereas Japanese education already concentrates on that front and the penetration and expansion of Japanese language education in South Korea will naturally follow, secondary education institutes in Korea these days simply repeats the basics. Thus, it is not ‘promoting’ but ‘maintaining the status quo.’ With this in mind, Department of Japanese Education of Shila University and and Busan Institute of Secondary School Japanese Education have been jointly host an annual event titled ‘Japanese Language Camp,’ with a view to ‘providing more opportunities to experience Japanese language and promote understanding of Japanese culture.’ The state and operation of the camp as well as questionnaires from participating students reveal expectations of participating middle school students about Japanese language learning itself and the camp. Collecting facts on the current status so that the data could serve as a basis for future development of Japanese language learning in Korea this study devised instruction of Japanese language learning for minors from a different perspective than the existing research, especially in terms of the instruction on the institution and teachers’ part. The questionnaires show that students are more interested in Japanese language and more eager to learn it than teachers previously expected. The biggest problem is the reversed correlation between students’ motives and teachers’ instruction styles, where students’ needs cannot be met. The survey and the questionnaires helped grasp what middle school students want from language education and what kind of education method could help improve students’ competence. Using the results as a stepping stone, this study identified where Japanese language learning has biggest room for improvement and how the class quality could be improved. It also argues the need for building good basic level courses as well as organic linkage between middle school, high school and university curriculum in order to raise ‘global talent.’
