The purpose of this paper is to review aesthetic labor and to explore its usefulness as a conceptual framework for the analysis of women’s labor. The worker’s body in aesthetic labor is aesthetically used for corporate benefits and appears in the style labor market such as style cafes, hotels, bars, restaurants, and fashion retailers.
Good looking, smart appearance, well-spoken, and right attitudes of a prospective employee is significant for recruitment and selection. The selection of the worker’s body should be trained and moulded to fit in the nature of work and corporate/brand valuation.
The notion and practice of aesthetic labor foreground the aesthetics and embodiment in the labor. Aesthetic labor evokes the connection with women and beauty, which leads to rethink the commodification of gender and sexuality in the workplace. This notion also serves to recognize the changed meaning and the way the body is mobilized. Therefore, the notion of aesthetic labor has significance for analyzing women’s labor with more understandings of the service labor process.
