Protestant Christianity (particularly in its Pentecostal form), with its remarkable success story exemplified by Yoido Full Gospel Church (YFGC) founded by Paul Yonggi Cho, has become exceedingly influential in modern Korea. Regarding the reasons for Pentecostal success, I will pick out common points of emphasis in shamanism and neo-Pentecostalism: exorcism through the spiritual warfare, spiritual healing, and this-worldly blessings. The article suggests two agendas for future research: the ‘positive’ aspect of the religious function of shamanism for Pentecostal growth and the connection between Pentecostalism and economic culture in South Korea.
