At the first scene of the Gospel of Mark, following “the voice of one crying in the wilderness” (1:3), Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist (1:9). Mark calls it “the beginning of the gospel” (1:1). After his baptism, Jesus experiences the voice from heaven, “You are my beloved son, with you I am pleased” (1:10-11). For Mark, this is “the origin of the gospel” (’Αρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου) (1:1). Jesus hears a voice from the wilderness. He gets a voice from heaven. And he becomes a voice, which we call Gospel. Can one read the Gospel of Mark as a story of voice?
As is well known, major literary motifs of the Gospel of Mark are the para¬bles and the‘Messianic Secret,’ the repeated boat trips, the table fellowship (two feedings and the Last Supper), and the fatal misunderstanding and failure of the Twelve, etc. The most dominant theological themes of the Gospel of Mark are the Kingdom of God and gospel, Christology of passion, discipleship of servi¬tude, repentance and change of persons, etc. If voice is one of the most import¬ant structural elements in the Gospel of Mark, how does it relate itself to those motifs and themes?
The purpose of this study is to recognize the centrality and significance of the voice in the Gospel of Mark, by reading it as a story of voice. With this study, one can ask whether one can find a so called ‘a theology of voice’ from the Gospel of Mark and early Christianity. A passage of the Hebrew Bible says that voice is a mode of existence of God (1 Kings 19:11-14). One can take this as another meaningful task to interpret and evaluate the New Testament in a new fashion and we will begin by suggesting a reading the Gospel of Mark as an epic of voice.
This study suggests ‘a storytelling theater’ as a flexible methodology. For Mark the evangelist, gospel was a story of Jesus. The story of Jesus as a whole consists of small individual stories. In each individual story, Jesus and characters cause an incident and experience an evangelical event. However, the most im¬portant mode of communication of the gospel was not through text but through storytelling, not only in the community of Mark but also in early Christianity as a whole. By a storytelling theater, this study means analysis and imagination. For the purpose of this study, one needs enough imaginations on each small sto¬ry through empathy and sympathy as well as a detailed and close analysis on the composition and style of the Markan text.
