The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the mothers’ thermal sensation, wearing behavior and parenting attitudes on young children’s clothing. Eighteen mothers of 5 year old children (9 boys and 9 girls) participated in the study. The following results were obtained from the in-depth interviews and survey. First, in relation to clothing and health, most of the mothers responded sensitively to the clothing material and skin irritation and preferred to use natural clothing materials. Some of the mothers seemed to be concerned about clothing for cold prevention and body temperature regulation when the children are exposed to a cold environment. Second, in general, the mothers" cold sensitivity and wearing behavior did not necessarily affect their children. Third, the mothers seemed to consider the design and size as conditions for the purchase of their children’s clothes. Fourth, considering the relationship between the mothers’ wearing behavior and their parenting attitudes toward the clothing of their young children, the mothers’ characteristic wearing behaviors might affect their children. However, considering the mothers’ attitudes toward the purchase of their children’s clothes and clothing instruction, there was more awareness of the concept of the young children’s (gender?) role in the mothers of girls than in those of boys. When considering the fact that the wearing behavior in cold weather is closely related to health, because winter is the season in which clothing is of the highest importance, the result that only a few mothers were applying health related knowledge to their clothing suggests that it is necessary to develop a parental education program on clothing.
