This paper aims to analyze the pros and cons of the debate on the social and religious acceptance of homosexuality and the legalization of same-sex marriage. Especially I concentrated on the debate and survey of public opinion in Protestant churches of the United State and Korea where have been most controversial among denominations.
At July 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States legalized same-sex marriage in all states. The opinion of Court had attached great importance to the right to marry of same-sex couple and its related rights of child-rearing, procreation and education. It was the changed understanding of marriage and same-sex marriage of the people that the majority have took their stand on for legalization.
As a matter of fact, the public opinion of United States was largely in favor of same-sex marriage last decade and it was same in the most legalized countries of same-sex marriage or civil partnership of same-sex couples.
Some Protestant Churches in the United Stated such as United Church of Christ have asserted the right to marry of same-sex couples and there was no conflict between the right and their religious beliefs. But the other Protestant Churches like Southern Baptist Convention have opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage on the grounds of religious beliefs and tradition of Christianity. So they criticized the Court threatened the religious liberty, that is freedom of action in matters of religion.
There is no denomination of Protestant Churches in Korea sanctioning homosexuality and same-sex marriage. And the main cause is religious doctrine that marriage is the union of a man and a woman. But the public opinion of Koreans is rapidly changing toward opposing to discrimination to homosexual people.
With this analysis I concluded that religious beliefs are not primary factor for the social acceptance of homosexuality and the legalization of same-sex marriage in the religious plural society.
