Bandang (伴當) is a kind of private soldiers that newly appeared in the late Goryeo period, who were designated as Bandang (伴倘) or Banin (伴人) according to the case, and to explain the names, it means ‘an accompanying group.’ Its origin can be found in Nökör (那可兒), warriors of free people in Mongolian society in the 12th century. As this was translated into the Han’er language (漢兒言語) during the Yuan dynasty, it was born again as Chinese characters, ‘Bandang (伴當),’ and it seems that it naturally spread to Goryeo as the Goryeo- Yuan relationship became closer the in the late 13th century. In Goryeo, Bandang appeared in earnest since King Gongmin’s (恭愍王) regime as confusions in the internal and external situations aggravated. This usually consisted of people in the positions such as Poomgwan (品官), Sain (士人) and Hyangli (鄕吏), and for their own success, relying on the central high government officials, they took charge of the guard or served as military officers directly belonging to a local commander. Accordingly, Bandang made a constant contribution to the suppression of Japanese pirates (倭寇), and they were utilized as the base of the power holder’s force like private soldiers in the successive political upheavals.
