The law as an enforceable rule regulates and controls human behavior. In this regard, the language of the legal profession should be clear and distinct. When the law is written ambiguously, its various interpretations will cause lots of problems.
At this point, the Holiness Code(Lev 17-26), which is one of the main law codes in the Hebrew Bible, does not meet the linguistic criteria of the modern law. For one can fmd in this law code the art of persuasion such as inventio, dispositio, and elocutio, which were developed in the classical rhetoric in order to persuade the audience. In the Holiness Code, various rhetorical arrangements such as parallelism and chiasm appear in a micro-structure or in a macro-structure. By using rhetorical techniques such as omission, metaphor, repetition, and so forth, the Holiness Code does not satisfy the standard of the legal language from a modern perspective. Such characteristics of the Holiness Code, however, do not expose immaturities that ancient laws have. On the contrary, they aim to persuade the audience or the readers of the law and finally to invite them to live autonomously according to the Word. This intent is not revealed only by the stylistic scheme of the Holiness Code. Unlike the Covenant Code (Exod 20:22-23:33) or the Deuteronomic Code (Deut 12-26), the Holiness Code does not mention kings, judges, or rulers. No political power is given to priests. Such a fact gives many implications to the clergy, p이iticians , and lawyers who actively use rhetorical devices today.
