The purpose of this study was to empirically examine ; 1) the differences in the level of production Automation by manufacturing strategies(i.e. quality strategy, flexibility strategy, delivery strategy, cost strategy); 2)the effects of level of production automation on the manufacturing performance(i.e. quality performance, flexibility performance, time performance, cost performance); 3)the effects of fitness between level of production automation and manufacturing strategies on the manufacturing performance. For this purpose, I reviewed the previous research papers of the same area, then introduced a empirical research model of this study. Data were collected from a mail survey. Eight hundred questionaries were mailed to apparel manufacturers nationwide, and 97 responses were analyzed. The results revealed that : 1) higher manufacturing strategies showed higher level of production automation; 2) level of production automation have positive effects on the manufacturing performance ; 3) this study addresses the effects of fitness between level of production automation and delivery strategy on the time performance and between level of production Automation and cost strategy on the cost performance. Apparel manufacturing firm can use the results of this study as an indicator when introducing automation.
