Objective: This study aims to verify the mediating roles of empathy on the relationship between mothers’ personal-oriented verbal control style as perceived by children and children’s peer relationships.
Methods: The participants were 291 students (Grade 5 and 6) from six elementary schools in Gwangju/Jeonnam.
Results: First, positive correlations were shown between the mother"s personal-oriented verbal control style, empathy, and peer relationships. In addition, empathy was positively correlated with peer relationships. Second, the mother"s personal-oriented verbal control style influences peer relationships through empathy as a mediating variable.
Conclusion: Empathy completely mediates the relationship between mothers’ personal-oriented verbal control style as perceived by children and the children’s peer relationships. Such results could be used as basic data to enhance children"s empathy and conduct follow-up research on variables related to elementary schoolers’ peer relationships; they can also be helpful for the counseling and development of programs for the formation of positive peer relationships.
