Lifelong education in Taiwan has been flourishing due to the well-developed lifelong education policies. The Lifelong Education Law has been enacted, the Lifelong Education White Paper was published, and the Lifelong Education Year was proclaimed. Taiwan sets the clear goal that lifelong education should accomplish, which is to build a community-based lifelong learning society. Indeed, the Lifelong Education Year emphasized this goal very highly and presented some action strategies, such as practicing lifelong learning and lifelong exercise, and doing good deeds throughout the life. As a result, lifelong education in Taiwan begins to contribute to improving peoples` lives and to bringing more happiness to the people. In this context, it is worthwhile to study lifelong education in Taiwan in depth to see what lessons Korea might learn from its experiences. This study intends to explore the lifelong education policies in Taiwan in detail. In specific, first, the author attempts to find out the background based on which the policies have been developed. Second, the author investigates what policies have been implemented thus far. Third, the author examines what policies the Lifelong Education Law, the Lifelong Education White Paper, and the Lifelong Education Year try to carry out. Lastly, the author tries to identify the main characteristics of the policies and based on them, to make some suggestions. They are as follows: diversification of lifelong education institutes, development of learning organizations, establishment of community colleges, expansion of recurrent education, and emphasis of elderly education.
