The main purpose of this paper is to explore the nexuses between literature and religion. Since 1970s the concern about the relationship between literature and religion has occurred in the field of literature and religion as an intellectual way for overcoming the crisis of destruction of humanity and difficulties and problems faced in the post industrial society. As a result there have been many interdisciplinary achievements in both fields. Yet most of them have been limited in a narrow textual scope. In other word, in many cases the objects of analysis were limited to a writer’s or poet’s each work itself. There have been rare tries to comprise the whole literary world and principle.
For this reason, this paper after survey of research tendencies and achievements focuses on four themes as the nexuses between literature and religion. The first theme is the Moebiu-like relation between God and man, theology and literature. For this Paul Tillich’s insight, that is, “The basic theological questions is the question of God. God is the answer to the question implied in being.” is applied to the issue.
The second theme is the relation between sacredness and beauty. The harmony, combination and unity of two reality leads to sublimeness. In this case beauty stands for literature and sacredness for religion. Literature and religion converges upon one point, that is, sublimeness and the sublime.
The third theme is the relation among divine providence, human destiny, and human desire. In this part the possibility that human desire operates between necessity or divine providence and fortuity is explored.
The fourth theme is possibility of literary reduction and application of incarnation. In this part the main argument is about the paradoxical relation between emptying and filling. As fullness(pleroma) is achieved through emptying(kenosis) and filling, through emptying and filling in aesthetical spirituality literature and religion are able to achieve the final goal.
