The purposes of this study were to distinguish between the efficient Low cost carrier and inefficient Low cost carrier of South Korea by applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to determine the efficiency of the operation and provide suggestions vehicle for identifying better benchmarks of inefficient Low cost carrier. This study aims to provide suggestions and directions of how to enhance the efficiency of the inefficient airlines. To this end, DEA was employed to analyze the efficiency of Low Cost Carrier in South Korea. The empirical results indicate that by using CCR model, 3 Airlines(Jeju airline, air busan, Jin-air) show relatively high efficiency which implies the total effectiveness of the operation. The CCR model implies that the group of inefficient low cost carriers’ should reduce their cost of sales and sales goods & administration(SG &A) expense based on the numerical figure of the potential improvement. Specifically, inefficient group should reduce 89.5% of Cost of Sales, 10.5% of SG &A expense in order to perform efficiently. This study has its significance in applying DEA method to measure the productivity of each airline in order to help identify problems of the airlines and suggest better ways of operation. Based on the results, some managerial implications can be helpful insights to operators and investors of Airlines. For further research, applying DEA method to analyze other countries’ low cost carrier using various inputs might be considered upon data availability.
