This study investigated the moderating role of young children’s self-regulation on the relationship between parenting attitudes and their children’s peer competence. It also investigated the relationship between parenting attitudes and young children’s peer competence and the relationship between young children’s self-regulation and peer competence. The subjects were 207 young children, with a mean age of 61.99 months, in attendance at eight preschools and kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Research instruments used in collecting data were the ‘Peer Competence Scale for Preschool Children,’ ‘Maternal Behavior Research Instrument’, and the ‘Self-Control Rating Scale’. The collected data were analyzed through the SPSS 18.0 program and Pearson’s correlation coefficient and hierarchical-regression analysis. Findings were as follows. First, fathers’ rejective parenting attitude and mothers’ autonomous parenting attitude were found to be predictable variables that affect their children’s peer competence. Second, young children’s self-regulation was found to be predictable variables that affect young children’s peer competence. Third, young children’s self-regulation moderated influence of fathers’ autonomous parenting attitude on their children’s peer competence.
