Hangeul portrait of Buddha, which is represented in the Seizan Museum in Kochi, is well known for Buddhist story with Korean explanation on every scene. This characteristic of portrait founds nowhere else on any other altar portrait of Buddha. By analysis on this portrait, it may be summarized as follows. Firstly, it was the Chosokabe Motochika, who tooked portrait to the Japan. According to remaining documents at the Seizan Museum, He tooked the portrait as a war trophy during the Japanese Invasion. After the war, He bestowed portrait on the loyal retainer, the descendants of retainer have kept it for ages. Early 20th century, the portrait’s ownership was turned over to the Japan’s feudal and the Japanese Politician Tanaka Mitsuaki, it was donated to Seizan Museum in Kochi. Secondly, the portrait refers to Wolin-seokbo and intelligible explanation indicate that the purpose lays on material for enlightenment. Lastly, the portrait was made by Bhikkuni, and Royal woman supported the production of portrait financially. All these facts indicate that the Joseon royal family owned Bhikkuni temple as a strong candidate for the original location of portrait. The portrait scene, which describes the end of ordeal, riding dragon ship to the heaven, it brought great mental comfort and hope to the royal woman.
