‘De-Sinicization’ is a policy enforced former President Li, denghui and former President Chen, suibian came into power. It tried to eliminate ideology, virtue, symbols and marks of the traditional ‘China’ prevailing in Taiwan society for a long period since previous President Chang, kaisek retreated to Taiwan, while trying to break off from "China"
Also, the purpose of this policy is to replace "China" by emphasizing Taiwanese philosophy, history, culture and symbols, while pursuing independency from China.
Therefore, in contrast to the past arguments about Taiwanese independency that had ‘political implication’, ‘Breaking away from China’ policy has ‘cultural implication’; in the long run, it is part of ‘identity politics’ in order to retrieve ‘Taiwanese sense of national identity’ through fortifying Taiwanese identity that is different from that of the mainland China.
As a result, this paper will discuss following questions about ‘Breaking away from China’ policy: first, what is the historical background of ‘Breaking away from China’ policy?; second, how did the policy develop in detail?; third, how can we evaluate "Breaking away from China" policy and what is its ultimate political implication?
