2004년 7월 1일 서울시의 전면적인 대중교통 체계 개편과 함께 등장한 대중교통 카드시스템은 개개인의 통행, 환승 정보 및 이용 수단의 정보를 포함하고 있다. 이로 인해 기존엔 불가능하였던 대중교통 이용자의 통행 특성을 정확하게 파악할 수 있게끔 되었다. 이러한 변화 및 효과는 그 동안 제대로 이루어지지 못했던 통합대중교통망 차원의 대중교통 수단 간 서비스평가 뿐 만 아니라 지역 간 서비스 평가에도 충분히 활용가능하리라 판단된다.
