Professional voice users commonly report voice problems and voice-related complaints. Recently there have been a few studies investigating the voice quality of professional voice users. However, there has been any attempt to determine the effective treatment methods to conserve and restore their voice.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a holistic voice management program for professional voice users.The holistic voice management program included respiration exercise, vocal exercise, and vocal hygiene instruction.Three female special education teachers with voice problems were treated with this program which was administered 6 times of respiration exercise, 10 times of vocal exercise, and proper vocal hygiene instruction. In addition, the maintenance exercise was performed for 3 weeks. The evaluations were completed 3 times: Pretreatment, posttreatment, and maintenance phases. In each assessment, acoustic, aerodynamic measurements, stroboscopic and perceptual measurements were taken.The results were as follows:Firstly, the treatment program improved the subjects' voice quality significantly.Secondly, the improved voice was maintained after the treatment.The acoustic data revealed that the jitter, shimmer, NHR, and MPT were significantly improved. The stroboscopic data showed an improved glottal configuration and adduction. Futhermore, a questionnaire asking satisfactory level of the subjects about their voice was administered. All subjects were very content with their voice quality after the treatment.Therefore, these findings suggest that the holistic voice management program used in this study was effective and can be used tool in the treatment of voice problems of professional voice users.
