The purpose of this study is to investigate their beliefs in safety knowledge and performance capacity by analyzing the difference in early childhood teachers’ emergency safety knowledge and performance level about emergency situations within early childhood education institutes. To achieve the purpose of the study, 302 kindergarten and childcare center teachers from Gwangju, Jeonnam and Jeonbuk were included in a questionnaire survey. As results of this study, the most number of safety education course completion was ‘5 times a year or less,’ the organizers for safety education were found to be mostly ‘self‐education of early childhood education institutions,’ and preferred contents and methods of the safety education were found to be first aid methods and practice on site. As for the knowledge on coping with emergency situations, subjects were found to be relatively accurate in situations such as fire, foreign material inhalation, high fever, earthquake, and fall, but on the other hand, they demonstrated incorrect coping methods in situation of bites, burning, and sucking things into the nose. In the analysis of the difference in safety knowledge and performance level among early childhood teachers, the performance level was comparatively lower than all safety knowledge, and in particular, knowledge and performance of all sub-categories in traffic safety showed difference. These results suggest the safety education in early childhood education field must be planned centering on the practice oriented program and improvement of each individual teacher’s professional safety capacity.
