This paper examines contemporary drama’s reflections on the ethical response to the suffering of the other, concentrating on the ways in which Kaite O’Reilly’s Peeling combines disability politics and the ethics of vulnerability. While the play represents the Holocaust, atrocities of war, and terrorism which inform the ontological vulnerability of human beings, it particularly foregrounds the politically induced condition of “precarity” in which the disabled people are differently exposed to bio-political violence and discrimination, dramatizing disabled characters as the vulnerable other par excellence. In doing so, the play thematizes the relationship between the stage and the spectator. O’Reilly employs various devices to call on the audience to share the disabled characters’ vulnerability. The play’s metatheatrical frame, in particular, raises ethical questions to bear on disability themes. O’Reilly’s characters exemplify an encounter with the vulnerable other, or what Hans-Thies Lehmann calls “response-ability,” inviting the audience to participate and respond to the stage. This essay demonstrates how disability politics in contemporary drama can entail ethical considerations.
