This paper aims to examine recent discussions surrounding the orality of The Classic of Poetry (Shijing) and discuss the necessity of approaching the question of orality and literation of The Classic of Poetry from the performance aspect. Using the myth about conception from correspodence, this paper then inquires into the literation of mythology in The Classic of Poetry from the aspect of performance by focusing on the musical nature of the text. In doing so, I investigated that the orality of The Classic of Poetry cannot be discussed in the same context as that of Homeric epic—in particular, that it is somewhat overstretching to view The Classic of Poetry as an oral poetry by applying the oral-formulaic theory. I have also confirmed that the debate on the orality and literacy of The Classic of Poetry, which arose from the excavation of new manuscripts, could not reveal the nature of The Classic of Poetry. Since The Classic of Poetry assumed the component of lyrics in a musical performance, its musical nature must be taken into consideration in its discussion of orality and literacy. In order to do so, this paper used the myth about conception from correspondence, which appeared in “Birth of the People” and “The Dark Bird.” Using these as example, I have discussed the possible circumstance, in which mythical narrative has been condensed or omitted, which contradicts the way myths are often recorded in written form.
