Teachers’ qualification in Macao was relatively low during the 1980~1990s. At the time, local university and non-local institution started offering certificate and diploma programs for teachers. This article reviewed those programs for training Chinese language teachers that offered continually in the past twenty more years. The author questioned whether subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of those participated pre-service and in-service teachers could be enhanced by these programs. This article also discussed the significant role of the Education and Youth Bureau of Macao SAR government in teachers’ education and development. Over the past decade, a number of measures had been taken including the set up and perfecting of laws and regulations for clarifying the rights and duties of teachers, the support for creating a favorable condition for professional development for Chinese language teachers, the implementation of curriculum reform and the improvement of teaching methods, and also the formulation of long term language education policy. All of the above are good for the professional development of teachers in the field.
