Report Errors
President Trump criticized the foreign strategy of the Obama administration, and emphasized the necessity of a new foreign strategy. The foreign strategy of the Trump administration, however, did not radically break with that of the Obama administration. President Obama, who began his term immediately after the financial crisis of 2007-08, initiated a new foreign strategy focused on the Asia-Pacific. In accordance with the so-called ‘rebalancing’ strategy, the U.S. extensively strengthened its military power in the west Pacific and aggressively pushed foreign economic policies such as exchange rate adjustment, financial liberalization, and TPP. The foreign strategy of the Trump administration, represented by the slogan “America First” and “Make America Great Again”, appears more aggressive, unilateral and self-centered. Nevertheless, most elements of the ‘rebalancing’ strategy have been retained, and some of them have been even reinforced. In this vein, the foreign strategy of the Trump administration should also be analyzed in the context of the financial crisis of 2007-08 because the crisis still defines the strategic considerations of the U.S.
