In Korea, it is often regarded that the familism has had a greater impact on the society than in any other country in the world. There seems to be, however, no conceptual agreement concerning what characteristics it has and how it has affected Korean society. The term ‘Familism’ is sometimes used to mean oppsite implication by various studies. In this paper, we attempt to clarify the concept of familism in the Korean context, by taking previous studies into consideration dealing with the meaning and origin of the term, ‘Korean Familism’. Also, we point out that the ambiguous perception about the concept of family in Korea is a critical factor in producing such conceptual complexity and ambiguity in Familism. Finally, we propose the “Network type Family Model,” not “Group type Family Model,” as an alternative way to conceptualize the Korean Family Model. By applying this model, we provide a way to analyze the culture of Korean familism based on the understanding of social associations in Korean society. This is not to look at the family as a fixed unit or group and find its function, but to consider the culture of family formation from a holistic perspective of human association in various level(person-family-society).
