Recent Korean television entertainment programs have played an essential and integral part in broadcasting companies’ revenue growth through advertising sales and of the reputation enhancement of their channels. This leads to the production of entertainment programs that use trends or materials that viewers like to watch in order to increase viewing rates or sales of ads. This in turn results in the homogenization or similarization of these programs. As a way to contribute to the research on media diversity, this study aims to find the presence of this phenomenon by conducting an empirical analysis of the TV entertainment programs.
For this end, this study analyzed the format and material types of a total of 621 entertainment programs produced by eight channels from 2012 to 2017. It was found that the ‘real variety’ format was more frequently used and the ratio was also rising steadily. Furthermore, programs using ‘food’, ‘travel’, and ‘family’ materials have continued to grow since 2012. This result reflects a predilection for trendy materials that guarantee a stable viewing rate rather than explore new materials, implying a decline in thematic diversity.
KBS and MBC, public network broadcasting companies had highest degree of similarization of programs with other channels, along with the gradual increase to the recent time. Among the diverse program formats and materials, ‘real variety’ format and ‘travel’ material played a prominent role in the similarization of entertainment programs.
This study concluded with the remarks that future studies are able to produce more comprehensive results by including influencing factors such as organizational culture and companies’ financial situation, as well as conducting the research on the program production process.
