This paper is about the woodcut print of Bertha Lum(1869-1954), American woodcut artist in early 20th century. She produced woodcut, which was decorative fusing Art Nouveau, Illustration, Japanese and chinese traditional Woodcut.
Bertha Lum studied Decorative design at the Art Institute of Chicago and after a few years followed Illustration courses of John Francis Frank Holme(1868-1904) who founded the Chicago School of Illustration.
An important opportunity that she buried herself in producing woodcut was honeymoon trip to Japan in 1903. She was clearly taking a page from the Hokusai(葛飾北斎, 1760-1849) and Hiroshige(歌川広重, 1797-1858)"s book in first time. In 1907, her third trip, she met two Ukiyo-e(浮世繪) artisan, Igami Bongotsu(伊上凡骨, 1875-1933) and Nishimura Kumakichi(西村熊吉, 1861-1941), she began making the unique style. Her style of blended Art Nouveau with Ukiyo-e has brought a fresh topic to the artists in Tokyo, since then, her woodcuts have greatly influenced the early work of western Shin-hanga(新版畵) artist Lillian May Miller(1895-1943).
Bertha Lum has expanded her scope of activity to China since 1922, mainly lived in Beijing and interacted with many Westerners and Chinese. She wrote many books about Asia, worked as an illustrator. Especially, during her visit the China, she acquired more unique dignity by restoring the "Raised line", a traditional woodcut making method of China.
Also, remarkable about Bertha Lum"s work, she visited Joseon Dynasty between 1922 and 1935, traveled around Seoul, Diamond mountain, Gyeong-ju. Her travelogue and illustrations are included in Gangplanks to the East, which was published in 1936. In the same year, she made impressive woodcut Diamond Mountains.
Bertha Lum has completed her own woodcut style based on a wide range of activities and artistic knowledge. She is an important figure in the early 20th century American art as well as Shin-hanga in Japan.
