This study begins with the phrase “memory is less than history but more than that” by historian Dominick LaCapra. He says that purely original memory does not exist in the first place, and even suppressed and denied memories have informative value. Because the memory depicts the pain left by the trauma or the fear of survival for the extreme situation. This shows entities that statistics or objective descriptions does not have.
S. Alexyevich’s work, which will be discussed in this article, completes the central narrative based on this memory, testimony, and record. The author has invented a distinctive genre called “polyphonic writing”, and he introduced a new type of novel that collected and recorded the testimonies of actual figures and completed the work.
This paper analyzed The Last Witnesses: A Hundred Unchildlike Lullabies of the artist’s work as oral history, one of history research methods. This is because the oral history, which is the method of writing history for the small people who have been forgotten by the meta-discourse, is the same as the artist’s ideology.
Especially, the oral witnesses of the Last Witnesses who were children during the war show the biggest memory distortion at the time of the interview. Despite these errors, however, their testimonies are of emotional value. The memory shows errors and disappears, but the trauma does not disappear. This trauma is caused by the loss of parents during the war. This trauma is provided by the war-led state. However, the state defines itself as a victim’s frame through media after war and brainwashes this erroneous frame to the public.
Against this meta-discourse oral history of writing history from bottom appears. The history of the oppressed small people goes out into society and gets popular sympathy. This popular sympathy and support is the beginning of healing for the trauma survivors.
