This paper argues the effects of Svetlana Alexievich’s writings on the philosophical, linguistic, historical, and literary level, focusing on War Has No Womanly Face. Alexievich’s ‘voice novels’ challenge the grand narrative of the West mainly constructed by nationalism, male-centrism, and scientific objectivity. But reading her novels in terms of binaric alternative involves its own dangers since modernity has exerted the capacity to absorb the challenges, classify them, segregate them, ultimately to control and dominate. In order not to be contained in the grand-narrative, Alexievich’s works should be approached as unexpected and uncontrollable effects not as an opposite/alternative. Derrida’s idea of “archive fever” provides a useful point to investigate the death drive of memory/history itself. Alexievich’s novel does not hold the consistent and autonomous messages; instead, it drives itself to irrevocable loss and destruction. Agamben’s argument of “Stimmung” also offers valuable insight through which the narrators’ image in the Alexievich’s text stands out; they moan and scream because the words are dis-articulated at the moment they are articulated. William Reddy interprets the idea of ‘emotion’ as ‘translation’ conceptualizing the whole process of utterance as an endless interpretation and reinterpretation. “The history of emotion” Alexievich tries to write in her own work is the whole process of translation that has happened in the individuals. Alexievich’s work can be effective when the idea of modern man, language, and memory should be questioned and reexamined along with these effects her ‘voice novels’ invoke.
