This study investigated existentialism of characters shown in an animation movie of auteurism. Characters of the animation movie are expressed as not only de-spatialized one who goes beyond reality and non-reality but also the beings whose abstract concept is formed in shape. As such, existence of characters is a critical factor to understand the animation of auteurism.
In such context, one of the most proper movies that present fundamental questions about the boundary and identity of human being and non-human being is 〈GHOST IN THE SHELL〉 made by Director Oishi Mamoru. The characters in the movie are in a society where computer network dominates, and they are largely classified into three categories: a cyborg that is a combined form of human brain and mechanic device; a puppet master, and a new type of life created by combining cyborg and puppet master.
As a result of studies on the characters in the 〈GHOST IN THE SHELL〉 in the terms of existentialism of ontology, it was found that the hero, Kusanagi is a spiritual cyborg having self-identity while it has an ambiguity of reality and illusion through sublimation based on a pure human being. On the other hand, a puppet master in the movie is a prototype of the only one created by technology. It has the free will that does not be bound by inherent properties and selects a new existence of self. The new life is a new type of species and it is an extreme existence that selects the self-existence by its free will.
That is, in a society of technology, human being, cyborg and the new life keep making themselves of inherent value. Existence of such diverse and individual characters has newly evolved as an existence that obtained mineness through repetition of self -denial and self-transcendence.
