이 연구는 보행자 중심 교통보행환경 개선을 다루고 있으며 대전광역시 괴정동 롯데백화점 일대를 중심으로 대상지를 선정하여 현장조사 및 설문조사를 통해 조사한 데이터를 분석하여 문제점을 도출하였다. 또한 보행자 중심의 교통보행환경 개선을 위하여 관련 선행연구를 통해서 각각의 개념 및 특성을 정의하고 구성요소를 도출하였고 이를 바탕으로 국내외 보행자중심의 환경개선 사례를 조사하고 개선방안을 종합하여 보행자중심의 교통보행환경 개선방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 결과적으로 도로에 각각 주어진 환경을 활용하여 ‘테마를 부여한’ 보행자 중심 도로를 계획하여 안심하고 보행할 수 있는 보행의 자유가 이루어 질 수 있는 보행환경 정비방안을 모색하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 대전시 괴정동 일대를 대상으로 보행환경의 실태를 조사하여, 열악한 보행환경이 조성되어 있는 현황을 파악하고, 이에 보행에 있어서 쾌적한 환경을 조성하기 위한 개선방안을 제시하고, 대상지 가운데 특징 있는 도로에 대하여 보행환경 개선을 위한 설계안을 제시하였다는데 의의가 있다.
