This article focuses on ‘sports mega-event’ such as the Olympics Games from the perspective of international relations, given the situation that 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics has newly called the people’s attention to the roles and functions of the global sport events. This article views that sports mega-event can be a research theme of the academics of international relations(IR) in consideration of their common nature as the phenomenon beyond the boundary of a sovereign state. Against this background, arguing that sports mega-events can function as source of power from the perspective of IR academics, this article studies the related cases, 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and UEFA Champions Leagues. The PyeongChang Olympics demonstrates that sports mega-event exercises ‘platform power.’ The Champions League case shows the potential of the event to form a shared identity among the related people. In the later part, this article explores the ways to exercise the potential of sports mega-event as the sources of power in relations to North Korea from the perspective of policy implication.
