This study aims to examine The Awakening written by Kate Chopin focusing on Edna Pontellier’s character formation. Edna, who could not fulfill her dependency need when she was young, has lived a life that conforms outwardly, and questions inwardly with hiding her desire. Therefore, she was a child hiding her desire and emotions, and becomes a woman wearing a mask. Edna as the second child of three sisters defiantly married Léonce Pontellier to escape from her strict and repressive father and elder sister. She closed the door to the realm of romance and dreams and chose stability in the real world. Though she suppressed her desire, it never disappears and eventually reappears. Edna, bewildered at first, follows the impulsive desire she suppressed by reflecting her life. Finally, she liberates her soul that confined to her body. Although she removed her mask, she is not able to find someone her soul unites genuinely. Edna bravely walks into the sea in order not to give up herself because she cannot wear a mask again to live in a society that does not accept her as a human being with desires. This last scene implies Edna’s suicide, but since it is ambiguous, I attempt another nterpretation of the scene in this paper.
