This article examines the life conditions of urban Chinese youths and explores some aspects of marriages and unmarriages of them and their socio-cultural meaning. Chinese youths are called by the party-state as the future leaders and locomotive for future growth. However, the reality that they live in is filled with rapid polarization, fierce competition in education and employment, and so on. Especially, housing problems caused by expensive house prices are very serious. Marriage is also one of the difficult problems Chinese youths have to face with.
Due to concerns about the increase of unmarriage and late marriage and decline of childbirth, the party-state is deeply involved in marriage and childbirth. In addition to this, the fact that the parents claim youths to have to get married with the opposite sex of good qualification at the proper age helps to make marriage a step in the normative life process.
Young people, on the other hand, try to avoid or delay marriage because of some predictable difficulties or fear of marriage. In this process, the highly educated women who avoid marriage are given a discriminative label of ‘leftovers.’ There are many men who can not find marriage partner due to the sex ratio imbalance caused by one-child policy and the preference of boys. But the labeling of ‘leftover-women’ is the result of shifting its responsibility on unmarried women. The patriarchalism and gender discriminatory attitudes of the male-dominated Han Chinese society influence the use of the term ‘leftover-women.’
