The purpose of this study is to investigate content-based paraphrasing strategy on EFL learners’ paraphrasing, and their awareness of paraphrasing qualitatively. Despite the importance of content of source text when paraphrasing, it has been overlooked or ignored in the fields of EFL/ESL educational settings and studies. For this study, the strategy of RSRP(Read-Summarize-Rhetorically change-Paraphrase) has been developed by the author. This strategy focuses on the importance of reading text carefully, and Rhetorically change what is understood from the reading. By specifying inferential thought processes while paraphrasing, it highlights effective paraphrasing at a different level from source text rather than touching only the surface of a text, by changing words and structures of sentences. In this context, this study insists that the paraphrasing strategy RSRP based on the content of a reading, be used by learners of English to become better writers. For the purpose of this study, use of RSRP strategy by two participants in their writings of paraphrasing tasks have been analyzed. Additionally, participants were surveyed, before and after the experiment. Findings suggest that concluding and transitioning were mainly used as a way to Rhetorically change, and content-based paraphrasing strategy has changed their awareness of paraphrasing.
