At the end of the Goryeo dynasty, a Chinese legal tradition that dictated the social status of a son according to that of the father, and Goryeo’s previous conservative order involving social classes, existed simultaneously. Due to such social condition, in which the age-old Goryeo principle that had been ruling all offsprings of either one or two lowborn parents as a lowborn was considerably weakened than before, Jeong Do-jeon was able to apply for the competitive dynastic exam and enter the government to eventually serve as a prominent official.
Yet when the Mongol Yuan empire’s influence began to fade away, memories of (and not to mention preferences to) the ‘old order’ resurfaced again, as we can see from an attempt that was eventually made to ban sons of lowborn concubines(孽子) from governmental service of any kind. Witnessing such change in winds, Jeong Do-jeon had to join a group of officials that included Jo Jun, who was determined to replace Goryeo with a new dynasty.
Jeong Do-jeon was taught by Yi Saek and was a friend to Jeong Mong-ju, but chose to secure his status and fulfill his political ambition by collaborating with the group aiming for a new dynasty, as the members of that group were willing to embrace Chinese order in a much more comprehensive fashion than others. On the other hand, Jo Jun and his group wanted to enlist Jeong Do-jeon as a prominent Neo-Confucian scholar whose talents were on par with that of Jeong Mong-ju, and thus secure support for the new dynasty’s foundation. Jeong Do-jeon promoted a provocative and criticizing attack on Buddhism and verbally assaulted opposing Neo-Confucian scholars, and demanded the head of his own teacher Yi Saek citing the notion of ‘loyalty and treachery,’ which suited the needs of Jo Jun’s group nicely. That is why and how he joined the efforts to expediate the fall of Goryeo and the rise of Joseon.
