The purpose of this study is to examine the aspect of knowledge exchange between Korea and China, focusing on the modern book circulation phenomenon. The study attempts to clarify the knowledge phenomenon of modern China centered on the translator of Shanghai Gangnam Jejochongguk Beonyeokgwan (製造總局飜譯館), and focuses on identifying the route of these books into the country. A summary of the discussions in this study is as follows.
First, it seeks to explore the meaning of the "Guyeokpilsul (口譯筆述)", which was of relatively less interesting in the previous studies, in relation to the activities of Gangnam Jejochongguk Beonyeokgwan. This is a method in which a Chinese person writes a Chinese sentence if the western person who is not familiar with Chinese translates it orally. Secondly, it explores the activities of the Gwanghakhoi (廣學會), established in 1887, in terms of knowledge production in modern China. By August 1907, the group had published more than 264 translated books, most of which were imported at that time. Third, the attention of the Chinese modernization process in Korea is the path of knowledge circulation. Traditional Chinese knowledge distribution channels are centered on meandering. Fourth, it verifies the distribution situation and influence of those books made by the Beonyeokgwan and the Gwanghakhoi.
