This study aims to conduct comparative analysis on hub airports productivity focusing on airline joint venture events. The latest stage of co-operation in the aviation industry is the establishment of airline joint venture. The formation of airline joint ventures is shown to improve connectivity around the globe and the frequency of flights. This in turn expects to enhance the ease of transfers by reducing the waiting time for connecting flights in joint venture airlines’ hub airports. This could attract more passengers to joint venture hub airports and improve their productivity. We attempt to expand the literature by empirically showing hub airports productivity growth after the airline joint venture establishments. This study analyzes the productivity of nine joint venture hub airports before and after the airline joint venture events. Then, nine non-joint venture hub airports are paired for additional comparative analysis. Data four years prior to and after the joint venture formation, a total of nine years including the formation year, are used. Results show a significant difference in hub airports productivity only in terms of processed passengers before and after the airline joint venture events. However, when compared with non hub airports productivity, we could confirm a meaningful increase in joint venture hub airports productivity after the joint venture formation. Each airport’s result comes out different, hence, is analyzed in depth. Successful JV hub airports with increased connectivity contribute to the local economies via job creation, taxes, and tourism improvement. The findings confirm the need for airports to compete for joint venture bid to improve their productivity to overcome slow growth and increase its competitiveness. This implication also applies to Incheon International Airport. The limitations of this research are considered and potential directions for the future research are outlined.
