This comparative essay investigates the thought of H. Richard Niebuhr and Charles E. Curran. They expanded the capacity of a personal morality to involve socio-political relations and to transcend group egoism. In the process of probing their ethics, this study argues that theology, God, and the Church are fundamental and practical resources for a personal moral life in the systems of thought of Niebuhr and Curran. This comparative study argues that Niebuhr and Curran have a shared belief in the unity of the moral life of a person in individual and social relationships when the person is nurtured, taught, fulfilled, and grounded in moral principles and communities. However, they show some differences in their arguments and styles dealing with theology, God and the Church. While other resources of moral life such as God and the Church are effective and valid for moral decision-making and action, it is evident that for Curran, the Church and its role for moral life have been more developed than his notion of God. On the other hand, Niebuhr seems to construct a more theoretical basis of the notion of God. While he has consistent interests in ongoing issues of his contemporary world, Niebuhr does not seem to stop constructing his theoretical basis of God. Finally, both Niebuhr and Curran make strong arguments regarding the possibility of an agent’s moral decision-making and actions in complex social relations and provide some of the important resources for living a moral life.
