The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the facilitatory effect of bilateral movements on the affected limb according to side of brain damage by analyzing the effect of simultaneous performance of upper limbs on the tapping performance of the affected limb. Ten stroke patients performed tapping tasks in three limb conditions, affected, unaffected, and both. In the left brain stroke patients, total time of the affected limb was found to be shorter when it performed the task simultaneously with the unaffected limb compared to when it performed the task separately. Total time of the unaffected limb was not shown to differ by the performance condition. In the right brain stroke patients, however, total times of the affected and unaffected limb were found to be longer in the both limbs condition compared to the separate limb condition. These results suggest that the facilitatory effect of bilateral movements on motor performance of the affected limb may differ by the task constraints and the side of brain damage. Thus, these factors should be taken into consideration for the application of bilateral movements to the rehabilitation programs for stroke patients.
