Largely drawing upon recent theories of social space this paper explores the function and meaning of various spaces in D. H. Lawrence's The Rainbow. As Henri Lefebvre and others have noted our understanding of space as a naturally given, homogeneous locus is in fact socially, historically, and ideologically constructed. Far from being a neutral and empty background where history and narrative unfold, every space “implies, contains, and dissimulates social relationships.” As such, social space is a reification of power structures and dominant social order; and yet it is anything but a deterministic structure or an inert object. Instead, it is a dynamic place replete with conflicts and resistance, thus open to perpetual change, restructuration, and remolding. In The Rainbow, much of the conflicts between characters revolve around their different spatial perspectives and practices formulated in specific socio-cultural and historical circumstances. Through these conflicts the novel uncovers and challenges dominant social order that at once has produced and been produced by the physical and conceptual spatial arrangements and codes. Many places in the novel emerge as contested, dynamic, and multifaceted social spaces where diverse spatial codes and practices constantly collide with one another, refusing to be subsumed to dominant ones. By disrupting various place myths that threaten to annihilate integral selfhood and preclude self-realization, the novel strives to envision a more liberating geography.
