James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence, both of whom were regarded as “the outsider” or “the exiler” of each one’s own society, commonly rejected to conform to the established conservative dominant ideologies, showing sharp interest in the various social issues. This article focuses on the different narrative methods employed by those two writers in the above mentioned texts. Lawrence allows Ursula, the main female character in Women in love, to take part in the direct dialogue with Birkin, which reveals that woman at least on the superficial level has the equal right to speak out her own independent ideas and thoughts. But at the same time, he did not ignored the social condition of his days where it was not easy for women to acquire the completely equal position with men in terms of discourse power. This is proved by Birkin’s dominance in his dialogue with Ursula where she mainly plays the role to ask or to object to his opinion. And Joyce not only endows Molly with the strong and powerful interior monologue which functions as the effective means to express her own ideas without being obstructed, but also sets her the privileged last narrator in Ulysses who can re-narrate the statements of the former male narrators from her own viewpoints. However, Molly’s interior monologue itself reflects her situation in which she can not make genuine dialogic relationship with male counterparts in her society.
