This study aims to discuss D. H. Lawrence’s critical and ameliorative perspectives on Western societies in the light of eco-aesthetics in Women in Love. Lawrence’s eco-aesthetics is frequently found in his exploring a self that is dynamic, personal and natural in life because he takes a subversive attitude against the rational idea and absolute value of the Western modern society. Lawrence is critical of Rene Decartes's reason-centered rationalism based on the Christian absolute oneness and moral code, as are ecocritics. It is in this context that Lawrence criticizes the modern ideology, for he sees it as a single, invariable ideology which is fundamentally false to the dynamism of a natural and personal self. He argues that the dualism prevalent in Western thought separates man from woman, severs mind from body, and wrenches humanity from nature. Lawrence’s emphasis on a reverse of the modern concept of a one and absolute value, like that of ecocritics, is found in insisting that both body and mind should be inextricably interwoven on the basis of a inter- subjective correlation. In Women in Love, he truly says that the primitive being is more fundamental and active than the civic element. But the pivotal thing he attempts to show in this novel is that the physical satisfaction which marriage may bring isn't perfect. The ideal end he projects in his novel is that of a mutually coordinated human-natural and physical-spiritual fulfillment. He shows his ideal aim of this kind through Ursula's and Birkin’s efforts which mutually search for an inter-perceptive and inter- subjective basis in their relationship and in their continuing development of self-fulfillment and self-creation.
