The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of balance movement program in Korean dance on lower limb muscular strength, flexibility and balance in elderly women. Fourteen elderly women aged between 61-79 years (mean age 68 yrs, standard deviation 5) were participated for 12 weeks Korean dance program. Korean dance program, including left and right turn, stepping backward, breath control and Korean folk musics, related to static balancing. The program consisted of approximately 60 minutes of dance, 2 times a week for 12 weeks. During 60 minutes workout, there were 10 minutes of warm-up dancing, 40 minutes of conditioning dance and 10 minutes of cool-down dancing. This study measured three basic fields of physical fitness - lower limb muscular strength, flexibility, balance - with comparison between the time before and after the execution of Korean dance program. We classified according to age, 60s and 70s, and analyzed mean differences of observed variables by paired t-test. The data indicated that there are significant differences in lower limb muscular strength (standing up and sitting down a chair, p=.001), flexibility (sit and reach test, p=.002), and balance(one leg balance with eyes open test, p=.003) in 60s. The results suggest that Korean dance movement can improve the lower limb muscular strength, flexibility and balance in elderly women.
