The Musical Syntax of Korean Folksong, Chindo ArirangDae Chang JuChindo Arirang, one of the Korean traditional folk song from southern province, is known to the general public in Korea and regarded as a typical tune that holds the musical characteristics of Korean traditional music. This paper aims at giving an introduction to the musical syntax of Korean traditional folk songs by means of musical analyzing Chindo Arirang. Korean music has different dynamics from western music, so this paper has concentrated on the structural analysis of dynamic patterns.Chindo Arirang consists of four phrases like many folk songs in the world. But it has characteristic dynamic scheme and is played to Semachi Changdan(rhythmical framework) accompaniment. That provides typical forte(strong)-piano(soft) system in the song. In western music, the first beat of a metre is strong, and the other beats are not so strong like the first. But in Chindo Arirang there are to find three dynamic patterns in a unit of musical time: mezzo forte(mf)-forte(f)-piano(p), f-p-mf, mf-f-mf. This patterns serve repetitive or cyclic materials and make it possible to constitute structural relationships. According to the coupling types of the patterns, melodic directions or musical ornamentations(Sigimsae) become different. Chindo Arirang has remarkably complex in terms of melodic variation, but it has a obviously functional quality through the dynamic patterns.
