'иметь' Possessive Construction in Russian

The study explores semantic and pragmatic characterics of Russian 'иметь' possessive construction. So far it has been regarded as more restricted and secondary compared with 'у' possessive construction. But like 'у' possessive construction, it also has its own semantic and pragmatic territory.
First of all, it is in the human-oriented model. In this construction, various relations between possessors and possessees rather than assertion of possession or the existence of the possessees are evoked. Among these relations, ownership, availability, inherent feature, possessor's subjective attitude toward possessee are most frequently met.
As a result of these various relations, it has following additional status compared with 'у' possessive construction. (1) It can be used even if the possessor is not animate. In this case, it usually express part-whole relation or inherent feature of inanimate possessor. (2) Expressions of location often conflict with these relations. It is due to the concreteness of the expressions of location. They are allowed only if they don't conflict with these relations. (3) It can be used to express metaphorical meaning. (4) Possessor should be definite. (5) If possessess are abstract nouns, they should not have feature [+action]. (6) Sometimes syntactic condition encourages to use it.
