This study explores the topology of 'culture(文化)' in the early 1920s. The term 'culture,' showed up already in the 1900s and was noticed by some intellectuals such as Lee, Kwang-su(李光洙) since the late 1910s. But it was in the early 1920s when 'culture' exercised its social influence. 'Culture' and the related compound nouns quickly spread to the general public and the provinces through the mass media and lectures. Especially, various and important groups used the word as a standard to analyze and criticize the realities of life. And they chose the word as the slogan of social movements. However, 'culture' had not one meaning. Key Words：culture, Culturalism, Culturalist Philosophy, anthropology, sociology, cultural history This study analyzes discrepancies in the three interpretations-concepts of culture originated in sociology, philosophy, and anthropology. Also, this study explores diverse methods with which the political-social groups applied and mixed the three interpretations for their own purposes. The final object of this study is to discuss the special characteristics of intellectual-cultural conditions after 3 · 1 movement by examining the compound and contradictory topology of 'culture'.
