Vietnam had been a matriarchal society in ancient times before the period of Chinese domination. Vietnamese women in primitive society played a leading role as the head of a tribe in a diversity of realms. They in particular made a great contribution to the defence of their territory with their heart glowing with patriotism. They underwent a radical change turning into a patrilineal society with Chinese invasion in which Confucianism prevailed throughout a great part of Vietnam. Vietnamese women fell so low as to become a class impossible to be exposed to the outside world. After independence from China, Vietnam endured the colonial domination from France. Liberated from Japanese colonial rule in 1945 and carrying out a successful communist revolution,Vietnam also experienced a considerable changes in its social order. As a result of it, Vietnamese women enhanced their status through the becoming increasingly active members of society as well as the new law and social order caused the traditional Vietnamese women's role and social standing to change. Vietnam passed numerous bills for the abolition of gender inequality. Vietnamese government's efforts beared the remarkable results for women to acquire the leading positions in various fields as well as the protection of women's rights in the aspect of the judicial system. Vietnam had shown the highest female participation rate in terms of equality employment in the field of Congress and Government sectors in Asia. For the quantitative growth, however, the leaders of Vietnamese women have worked in marginal areas like a health care, an education, and a labor sector rather than key areas,which are policy decision and making. Despite signs of progress in gender equality over the past years there is still significant gap between men and women in terms of quality of employment.
