Dave Mathewson and othe[rAs bhsatvreacatrg]ued that a close tie is found between the Greek OT passages describing the wilderness community and Hebrews 6:4-8. Based on this insight, I attempt to identify a number of additional connections and argue that the author of Hebrews viewed his audience as an education-centered community. In other words, the educational character of the wilderness community had a strong impact on the author of Hebrews. First, interpreters frequently find in fwtisqe,ntaj in Hebrews 6:4a an echo of the pillar of fire. I identify Thummim and Urim (Ezra 7:65, Neh 2:63) and the law (Deut 33:10, Sir 45:17) to be two other possible elements alluded in 6:4a. Based on linguistic (Pss 78:26-31; 105:40) and contextual ties, I trace the background of 6:4b to the falling down of quails, in addition to manna, which has been suggested as the unique allusion of the phrase. Whereas the reference to the elders of the Seventy is proposed as the allusion of 6:4c, it seems that a wider range of people such as Moses, the craftsmen including Bezalel, Caleb, and Joshua are associated with the event of becoming partakers of the Holy Spirit. Deuteronomy 32:2 will be presented as an allusion to Hebrews 6:7 in that these two cases share the same word, ue` toj, (“rain”), as the metaphor of divine teaching and similar plant motif. Lastly, Hebrews 6:8 and the wilderness community show the same punishment pattern (αδαδοκιμοσ “rejected” - καταρα “curse” - καυσισ “burning”). The tight linguistic and conceptual links between Hebrews 6:4-8 and narratives on the wilderness community suggest that the author of Hebrews saw his audience as an education-centered community.
