More than half uses of ‘covenant’ in the New Testament appear in Hebrews (17 times), among which most of them exist in chapters 8-9 in Hebrews. Why covenant uses are mostly repeated in the two chapters? Which contexts are they used? How can we understand these phenomena of uses from the structural point of view? Those questions are answered in this paper as the macro-micro structures of 5:11-10:39, particularly focusing on those of 8:1-9:28, the primary text for covenant-related, are suggested in detail. As a whole, we may say that 5:11-10:39 consist of five sections: 5:11-6:20 (A); 7:1-28 (B); X (8:1-9:28); B′ (10:1-18); A′ (10:19-39), which are chiastic in structuring. It may mean that the X (8:1-9:29) is centering in function, strongly persuading the readers with the new covenant theology so as to support the logic of Christ-being-High-Priest and his once-forall-sacrifice. The structure of 8:1-9:28 is parallel: 8:1-6 (A); 8:7-13 (B); 9:1-14 (A′); 9:15-28 (B′). A and A′ are interrelated in terms of tents (or sanctuary), while B and B′ are repeating covenant issues. The true tent is contrasted to the old one and so the new covenant is to the old one. Hebrews provides the new covenant of Jesus in theology, which is ‘better’ (κρεῖττος), replacing the old one by Moses. The structures in Hebrews demonstrate the meaning-network in pairing system, creating paired pairs in structures such as chiasms, mostly, and parallelisms, partially.
